Not sure if my final statement uploaded correctly:

Hierarchy of Needs in Firenze
By Gari Beidner

This piece analyzes how the basic needs of human beings are met through the lens of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs in the city of Florence. The five categories of human needs are proposed to dictate an individual’s behavior. Under Maslow’s criteria, one needs to meet the most basic needs at the bottom of the pyramid before you can achieve any of the following needs. One can only reach the top of the pyramid if all prior needs are met.

The specific needs on Maslow’s Pyramid are outlined through a concept map that guides the audience along the journey of how one navigates their environment to meet each necessity.

The five needs include:
- Physiological needs: food, water, and shelter (filmed as: food at market, gelato, clip of bed)
- Safety needs: security and health resources (filmed as locks, security codes, pharmacies, doctors)
- Love and belonging sense of connection and intimacy (filmed as: public affection and friendship)
- Esteem: status and respect (filmed as: belongings, respecting one’s body and environment)
- Self-Actualization: accomplishment and spontaneity (filmed as: reaching the top of a hike, enjoying the little moments)

The cycle never ends, as we continuously need to satisfy the needs outlined above and therefore the video loops. Within each segment of needs, a different background sound has been selected to be paired with the clips shown.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a critical part of a psychological curriculum. Understanding the pyramid provides one with a better understanding and internalization of the journeys that they have been a part of.

This piece can be utilized as an introduction video for all students starting their abroad experience. New students can be better braced and prepared to understand what it takes for them to reach self-actualization and thrive during their time in Florence. This project could be performed by all students at the conclusion of their abroad experience. Students can cumulate their own interpretation of their needs and add their representation to an archive every year creating an available map of human experience.

Overall, this piece can reflect the critical requirements that each individual needs wherever they are in the world. Meeting each need enables one to continue to the next as they are forming the roadmap to achieve self-actualization at the top of the pyramid.
