When developing my ideas to create a self portrait, basing myself in the Renaissance, I was flooded with many concepts. To draw a machine that represents myself, rather than a portrait based on the human. To create a painting, melding and falsifying myself into a reigning Italian family. To make myself a religious figure, for the Renaissance civilizations to admire and adore. Through all these ideas, I could not help but hold on to a particular part of the Museum of Galileo; in the first display room, hidden in a low-lit corner, were antique glasses and monocles. Without the creation of glasses, I would have never been able to admire the world in the way that I do now, due to my poor eyesight. With these glasses, inspiration was sparked. I will create a visual of myself, portrayed as man, one of the first developers of glasses. The choice to address myself as a man is dependent upon the fact that men in the renaissance were seen as the facilitators, thinkers, and achievers. Portraying myself as a woman who would have been a major developer of glasses is sadly very imaginative and impractical. So I will falsify a portrait of myself as a man wearing glasses, facing the side, with the beautiful details of life filling up the background. I will do this portrait with embroidery, as an ode to my own delicate side. Though I will be portrayed as a man, I love the soft, femanine things of life.

For the self-portrait project relating us to Florence, I will be focusing on the typography Florence has all around on the storefronts and different historical buildings. I am planning on using shapes to create certain word/words relating to myself. Now I am looking at the popular shapes of Florentine buildings and trying to incorporate that into the piece. The texture in the background I am planning on using the scaffoldings on the side of the Duomo. The themes that I will be using are based on what I have appreciated on my walks around Florence. These include my personal and graphic perspective. These include the orange-yellow colors on a lot of the buildings, the architecture, restoration, and the typography.

For the self-portrait project, I will be making a stained glass-inspired project. I plan to incorporate patterns from churches and building facades across Florence as well as draw inspiration from stained glass windows in Florence. Whereas most of the stained glass windows appear in churches and therefore contain biblical stories, my project will depict the story of my life and my family. I plan to incorporate various elements of my family heritage, family members, my interests, and more into this project.

(I have some images of church facades and stained glass windows, but I cannot figure out how to insert them here)

Project 1 - First Proposal

When a family crest was one of the visuals suggested for this project, I knew that I wanted to make a crest for myself and my family. I have a large family tree with a lot of different surnames, and since my dad is very fascinated with genealogy, we've gotten to learn a lot about each branch of our tree. Some of the oldest families in our tree, from hundreds of years ago, had their own crests. But my family name doesn't have one as far as we know; "Novak" is one of the most common Polish surnames, so if there are any Novak crests there's no way to know if that family was related to ours. That fact, paired with my love for the fantasy genre and especially Game of Thrones, makes designing my own crest really exciting.

So far, my idea is for a quartered crest. On two of the fourths will be our cat and dog; we've had our cat longer than we can remember, while my brother's dog is a new but much-loved member of the family. The other two fourths will show a collection of five objects, for me and my four siblings. Though I'm not sure what those objects will be, they'll probably be related to flowers or fruit, to reference our complex family tree.

For the self-portrait project, I plan to create a game of operation as it relates to maternal/fetal health. I was inspired by the room in the museum that focused on medicine. I would like this piece to be an interactive game with an informative element relaying an important message about health and pregnancy. I am thinking of having a pregnant woman and making an interactive game where people can learn about what foods to eat/avoid or what exercises to do while pregnant.

My goal is to create a glasses business that's roots are tied to the city of Florence. Patterns and designs around the city on buildings, churches, and museums and incorporated into the designs of the glasses. Each set of glasses will be custom made in which one will build themselves a pair by selecting a shape and temple arm design. When choosing out a design one will have a variety of shapes (round, rectangular, and quatrefoil) with multiple colors to select from. The temples or arms of the glasses will all have the same structure and width but different designs to choose from that will include inspiration from the Santa Maria Novella Façade, the façade of the duomo or other notable Florence staples like the Ponte Vecchio Bridge. The final product will likely be a catalog in which one would be able to order their pair of glasses from.

For this project, I am planning on making a family crest with things that matter most to me. I have a very close family even though we have very different life paths and are spread out all over the world. I want to make a family crest connecting us all together. I love how Florence has so many small streets that open to piazzas and open spaces, so I want to design this to connect us all. My last name is very special to me with both sides of my family having the same last name, so I want to incorporate this into the crest. The link below is a crest I found of Shapiro. I will include my interests and my families to bring the crest together as well as pieces from our heritage and family tree. I may also include a birds path combining the different paths of the city and my family while also including the symbolic meaning of it. The two family crests I added were some of my favorite more modern crests. I want to combine pieces from each especially the circle on the right one which is like the space connecting all of the sections.

For our First Project, I plan on creating a landscape of a Renaissance-inspired scene. At first, using pixel art and then using code to enhance the landscape, I want to explore and develop very basic animations within the scene to make it feel more alive. Depending on how the project goes, I may want to develop the scene further in later projects, adding soundscapes and interactive elements. I have yet to decide the exact scene I want to portray, but I have a few ideas including city streets, a museum, a workshop, a starry sky, and a few others.

For Project 1, I would like to create a still self-portrait of myself as Bottecelli’s primavera. The medium through which I would like to accomplish this is drawing. By focusing solely on the upper body of primavera, the goddess of spring, in this painting, I will attempt to recreate the dress which she wears, covered with flowers. Additionally, while I will draw a self portrait of my own face in the place of primavera’s and try to accurately illustrate my own hair, I will also attempt to recreate her flower crown. To do this, I will start by creating a rough sketch in pencil of my vision, separating foreground and background: my version of primavera and the landscape she stands in front of. After creating a rough sketch, I will go into more detail and add color to my creation.
